Here are some interesting facts and figures about construction projects Russian Railways is undertaking in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi:

  • Total length of routes laid by Russian Railways in the vicinity of the XXII Olympic and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014: 157 km.
  • Total number of new tunnels: 17 – including 11 rail and 3 road tunnels.
  • When completing tunnels many kilometres long, tunnel machines with 13 m diameter shields meet in the middle with just 3 mm difference.
  • A combined railway and road route will allow visitors to get from the Olympic Park in the coastal zone to Krasnaya Polyana in less than 30 minutes.
  • A large part of the combined route passes over bridges and flyovers with a total length of 38 km. The construction of bridges and flyovers has significantly reduced the area of ​​ Colchian that had to be cut down.
  • Russian Railways is building what is the first cable-stayed bridge in southern Russia as part of the combined railway and road. The length of the bridge’s longest span is 312 metres. The total length of the bridge is 807 metres.
  • To preserve the natural environment, between 2010 and 2011 Russian Railways released about two and a half million Black Sea salmon and carp fry and sterlets into the Mzymta and Shakh rivers.
  • Trains between Adler - Krasnaya Polyana and Adler - Sochi Airport will run every 15 minutes.
