Russian Railways Laden Container Traffic Growing


Russian Railways have reported a 12.2% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during January-November 2019. All in all, 4.53 mn TEU was carried during the period under report.

Domestic volumes were up 8.6% year-on-year to 1.89 mn TEU, export up 12.6% to 1.16 mn TEU, and import up 24% to 968.8 thousand TEU. Transit grew by 5.3% up to 524.5 thousand TEU.

Laden container traffic exceeded 3 mn TEU, up 12.7% year-on-year.

Commodity-wise, containerized timber and woodwork grew the most, up 33.5% year-on-year to 466.5 thousand TEU. Chemicals and soda were up 13.5% to 508.5 thousand TEU, consumer goods up 9.6% to 281.3 thousand TEU.

Containerized hardware increased by 8.4% up to 262.7 thousand TEU, vehicles by 10.1% up to 226.8 thousand TEU, machinery, equipment and engines by 8% up to 209.2 thousand TEU.

Ferrous metals grew by 12.6% up to 126.9 thousand TEU, non-ferrous metals by 5.7% up to 104.5 thousand TEU, construction cargo by 10.5% up to 103.4 thousand TEU, ‘other’ and LCL cargo by 21.14% up to 99.9 thousand TEU.

Containerized oil products were up 8.8% to 79.4 thousand TEU.

Paper was down 1.3% to 281 thousand TEU, and chemical and mineral fertilizers declined by 9.5% down to 35.4 thousand TEU.

In November, overall containerized traffic in the Russian Railways’ network amounted to 445.1 thousand TEU, up 31.6% year-on-year and up 0.7% month-on-month.
