Russian Railways Holding to monitor promising construction technologies for implementation in infrastructure projects
"The growth of global trade requires the expansion of infrastructure facilities for the sustainable transportation of goods, including by rail," said Oleg Toni, Deputy Managing Director of Russian Railways, who was speaking at a strategic session of the International Railway Congress in Vienna on 19 March 2019.
According to Toni, the annual volume of investment in capital construction is constantly increasing. The right conditions for the efficient use of the North-South and East-West international transport corridors (ITCs) are being put in place.
Toni said that the Russian Railways Holding would speed up the transit of goods by 2025 by building and upgrading main railway lines and integrating the infrastructure at transport hubs.
Oleg Toni also noted that the Russian Railways Holding plans to develop monitoring of new global technologies, select the best solutions and implement them in practice.
"We do want not to reinvent the wheel, but build our own technologies on this base," said the Deputy Managing Director.
According to Toni, such cooperation has already yielded good results. For example, the Russian-Austrian joint venture LLC RSRS GmbH is introducing modern technologies in the construction of railways, while cooperation through the Business Council with the Czech Republic allows the Company to deal directly with business on most issues affecting rail transport.
In addition, the construction side of Russian Railways actively uses elements of geo-information technologies in its design work and new construction. The Company already has successful experience in introducing one of the components of geo-information systems – the technology of laying railway track with a very high degree of accuracy in accordance with the project’s specifications using the Swiss PALAS absolute positioning system.
