International Railway Congress 2019 opens in Vienna

On 18 March 2019, the 2019 International Railway Congress opened in the Austrian capital Vienna. It is the largest business platform which brings together the heads of national railway companies across both the 1520 mm and the 1435 mm gauge space.

The Congress is also attended by representatives from the ministries of transport in several countries and heads of international railway organisations, as well as business leaders and railway industry experts.

Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, headed the Company’s delegation.

The Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Vladimir Tokarev read a greeting to the Congress’s participants from Maxim Akimov, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

"Creating a single transport space is one of the priorities for the development of the entire global economy. Strengthening international cooperation, the digitisation of the transport industry, technological cooperation, attracting investment and applying green technologies are urgent issues facing rail transport. The Congress is an excellent opportunity to discuss these areas and make informed collegial decisions," says Akimov in his greeting.

Tokarev also noted the importance of integration projects in the field of railway transport and forecast that the volume of Eurasian transit would increase, while stressing that railway transport had to maintain its competitiveness in this segment of the logistics business.

Andreas Reichardt Austria’s Deputy Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology, emphasised that all the discussions at the Congress would be devoted to one thing – infrastructure development, which would lend a strong impetus to economic growth across countries.

During its two days, the Congress will consider ways of reducing customs barriers and harmonising legal and technical regulations governing rail transport between Europe and Asia.

An important topic of the business platform will be to increase the competitiveness of European and Russian rail links and integrate the solutions found in international trade and tourism, including the project to build the 1520 mm gauge Košice-Bratislava-Vienna railway line.
