Passenger traffic between Russia and Finland increased by a quarter in 8 months in 2017
The president of OJSC Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov has held a working meeting with Rolf Jansson, Chairperson of the VR Group (Finnish Railways).
The meeting took place in Moscow on 13 September 2017.
The heads of the two railway companies noted the positive trends in passenger traffic between Russia and Finland.
In January-August 2017, 378,000 passengers were transported, 24.6% more than in the same period last year.
Allegro trains carried 329,800 passengers between St. Petersburg – Helsinki, 26.5% more than during the same period in 2016, while the Leo Tolstoy branded Moscow – Helsinki service was used by 48,300 passengers, an increase of 13%.
These positive results were achieved as a result of various marketing tools.
The Allegro trains are integrated into the RZD Bonus loyalty programme. On presenting their ticket in Helsinki, passengers can obtain discounts on hotels and restaurants, as well as on tourist excursions from partner companies.
Oleg Belozerov also drew attention to the need to further improve passenger transportation and reduce the travel time of the Leo Tolstoy train. According to Belozerov, carrying out customs and border controls en route on Finnish territory would solve this problem.
Freight traffic between Russia and Finland is also rising. In the 8 months of the year from January to August, more than 14.6 million tons were transported, 3.8% more than during the same period in 2016.
The increase in freight volumes was facilitated by working actively with clients and introducing new technologies, which resulted in an expansion of the range of freight transported. New categories of freight included gas pipes for the Nord Stream-2 project and coal, which is being transported on direct rail routes since August 2017.
In addition, Oleg Belozerov and Rolf Jansson discussed the prospects for joint work in the field of freight transportation from China to Europe and the North-South International Transport Corridor, as well as issues regarding the further development of cooperation in the field of electronic data exchange in freight transport.
