During periods of high demand, twin trains (20 carriages) run between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Passengers must arrive early for boarding: the double train consists of two separate units (10 carriages each) with no through passage.

Fares

General and special fares are available. Special rates are subject to a number of conditions, including age, whether the passenger wishes to purchase round-trip tickets, etc.

Discount plans cannot be combined (except for seats in the “children’s compartment” and seats for passengers with reduced mobility and/or disabilities). Minimum prices are available on tickets booked 90 days in advance, or where demand is low or moderately low. Reductions under special and general fare plans apply to the cost of the journey (service and commission fees are charged in full at all times).

If during the ticketing process you purchased a ticket at a discount to which you are not entitled, you will be required to pay the difference when boarding the train.

Special rates (“Birthday,” “Honeymoon,” “Junior,” “Senior”) are available for Russian citizens only.

When purchasing tickets online, the fare plan may be selected after the passenger’s personal details are entered. The final price will be displayed at the order confirmation stage.

Dynamic pricing

The fares for Sapsan high-speed trains are priced based on the market principles (without involving the state as a regulator). The final fare is generated by the Dynamic Fare and Demand Incentive System (DUTISS) depending on the time remaining until departure and the actual and anticipated passenger demand for the selected journey.

Ticket sales start time

Ticket for Sapsan trains are made available 90 days before departure. This period is subject to change if adjustments to the timetable are required.

Buying tickets for the meeting room compartment

Tickets for the meeting room compartment (travel class 1R) on Sapsan high-speed trains must be purchased together (four tickets). Tickets may be purchased by a single passenger, or by any number of passengers not exceeding four. The fare for this class is always per four seats and includes a service charge depending on the number of passengers in the booking: the minimum fare is for one passenger with four seats and the maximum fare for four passengers with four seats. The return of travel documents is only possible if all four seats are returned at once and a refund fee will be charged for all four seats in a given compartment.

Tickets for the compartment suite (travel class 1Zh) on Sapsan high-speed trains are issued in the form of an e-ticket upon payment for the entire compartment. The compartments are for one or two passengers, both of whom must provide their personal details when purchasing tickets. E-tickets for passengers travelling alone specify that two seats have been purchased. If two passengers are travelling, one seat for each passenger will be specified on the e-ticket. The fare will be charged according to the number of seats indicated on the e-ticket and the service charge will be calculated according to the number of passengers ticketed. No changes may be made to e-tickets that have been issued.

Where to get information and certificates

Information on the cost of travel on a Sapsan high-speed train for the date and time of the previously issued ticket, as well as confirmation of previously issued travel documents, can be obtained from the ticket offices of the High-Speed Transportation Directorate in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Passengers must be present in person and be able to present an original identity document in order to receive such information. The cost of this service is 350 roubles.

Cards

Holders of travel cards are entitled to discounts on tickets. Travel cards must be presented/used when purchasing tickets to get the respective discount (service and commission fees apply in full at all times)

Group ticketing procedure

Tickets for organised groups of passengers (OGP) on Sapsan (Nizhny Novgorod – Moscow – St. Petersburg), Lastochka (RZD facilities: Pskov – Veliky Novgorod – Petrozavodsk; St. Petersburg – Pskov; St. Petersburg – Sortavala; Rostov-on-Don – Novorossiysk; Moscow – Ivanovo; and St. Petersburg – Bologoye) and Allegro high-speed trains (St. Petersburg – Helsinki) can be purchased following the conclusion of a contract on the acquisition of travel documents for the transportation of passengers and the assignment of a single personal account (SPA of the payer).

The application is the basis for starting work to organise the transport of an organised group of passengers (OGP). A travel company shall independently prepare an application (the form is provided in the Sample Documents section) and send it to the personal manager at the High-Speed Transportation Directorate of JSC Russian Railways.

There is a single application form for all organisations. Application forms are completed for a single OGP of ten or more persons travelling on the same route, on the same train and on the same departure date. The application form shall be certified by the head of the travel company and the finance manager, and shall be drawn up on the organisation’s letterhead. The application form must include the first and last name and contact telephone number of the travel agent directly responsible for organising the journey.

Requests are accepted from 90 to 10 days before departure. Requests submitted less than 10 days before departure are accepted subject to availability. Each application must be accompanied by two copies of the passenger list, certified by the head of the travel company and the finance manager.

The OGP list must include the details of the group (or tour) leader on a separate line. The group (tour) leader must not change during the ticketing process. The OGP list must comply with the prescribed form (enclosed in the Sample Documents section) and contain up-to-date details.

Once you have submitted your application, you will be assigned a personal manager, who will check that the travel details you have provided are correct and up to date, and that the required number of seats is available on the service. You will receive an invoice within two business days after the application has been processed. The invoice amount depends on the class of travel you have selected and contains the amount required to reserve the seats and issue the travel documents. After the invoice has been paid and confirmation that the funds have been credited to the account of the High-Speed Transportation Directorate has been received, the seats will be reserved as requested. Reservations must be made at the ticket office of the High-Speed Transportation Directorate in the presence of a representative of the travel company.

The representative of the travel company must present:

  • power of attorney form M-2 for the right to issue travel documents upon request (dated and with an outgoing number), including passport details, the representative’s signature and company seal;
  • a payment order (with a bank stamp);
