The Energy Efficiency Management System at Russian Railways is implemented in accordance with the Russian Railways’ Industry Standard 08.017-2012 "Energy Efficiency Management System for Production Processes. The Main Provisions," which has been developed in accordance with the requirements of the international standard ISO 50001:2011. Every year, the Company’s structural units, which number more than 2,300, develop and implement the Russian Railways’ Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme, which is synchronised with the Operational Efficiency Improvement Programme, the Long-Term Development Programme of Russian Railways and the Holding’s Energy Strategy. The "Energy Efficiency" automated information system is a tool for planning and monitoring the implementation of the measures on the Energy Saving and Energy Efficiency Improvement Programme. The Energy Saving Programme’s measures are drawn up after taking into account the results of energy surveys at the structural units and put into effect by implementing the investment project "Introducing Resource-Saving Technologies on Rail Transport."

The main areas where Russian Railways implements energy-saving measures are:

  • improving train management technology;
  • increasing the energy efficiency of locomotives and improving their use;
  • improving the technical condition and use of the track facilities, which affect the energy efficiency of the transportation process;
  • improving the performance of the traction power system, which affects the energy efficiency of the transportation process;
  • improving the energy efficiency of heat generation facilities and other heating systems;
  • improving the energy efficiency of buildings and structures;
  • improving the energy efficiency of special rolling stock and special and motor-tractor technology;
  • improving the energy efficiency of lighting systems;
  • improving the energy efficiency of technological processes and infrastructure facilities.

In order to reduce the specific amount of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere, the Company is working actively to reduce the share of diesel fuel used in transportation by increasing the use of electrical energy and gas.

The volume of goods transported by electric as compared to diesel traction increased by 0.2% and reached 86.54%. The level of return of electric energy to the contact network from regenerative braking increased by 1.8% in 2019 compared to 2018 and amounted to 2,621.7 million kWh, which is equivalent to 5.5% of the total energy consumption. Automatic train systems and on-board locomotive systems for informing train drivers of the train’s optimal energy trajectory via displays and monitors are being actively implemented. New rolling stock is equipped with modern temperature maintenance systems in the locomotive cabs and passenger carriages (climate control). Together with the manufacturers of traction rolling stock, Russian Railways is developing a new-generation locomotive concept with a mandatory requirement for its energy efficiency levels.

Together with the manufacturers, Russian Railways is also developing an electric battery-powered rail tractor, as well as locomotives operating on the gas-diesel cycle GTEM-1 and two main and two rail tractor gas-thermal locomotives. A gas-turbine rail tractor, TEMG-1, has also been developed, with expected delivery of 8 units in 2020 and a further 54 units by 2025.

Two liquefied natural gas-fired gas turbines are in operation, with 23 more units planned for delivery by 2025.
