Freight loading volumes on Russian Railways’ network up 3.2% to 1.3 billion tons in 2021

According to the latest figures, freight loading volumes on the network owned by OJSC Russian Railways amounted to 1.2829 billion tons in 2021, 3.2% more than in the previous year.

In 2021, the railways loaded the following categories of freight. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to 2020.

  • hard coal – 371.7 million tons (+5.2%);
  • coke – 12 million tons (+7.5%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 217.5 million tons (+4.2%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 120 million tons (+0.2%);
  • ferrous metals – 69.3 million tons (+4.3%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 16.4 million tons (+14.4%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 65 million tons (+ 3.6%);
  • cement – 26.5 million tons (+5.5%);
  • timber – 41.8 million tons (+2.7%);
  • grain – 25 million tons (-10.1%);
  • construction materials – 126.6 million tons (-3.8%);
  • nonferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 19.7 million tons (-1.4%);
  • chemicals and soda – 24.3 million tons (-0.6%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 35.7 million tons (+ 5.7%);
  • miscellaneous other cargoes, including in containers – 111.3 million tons (+ 7.4%).

Freight turnover in 2021 amounted to 2,637.8 billion tariff ton-kilometres, an increase of 3.7%. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased to 3,319.6 billion ton-km, up by 3.1%.

Freight loading volumes on the network owned by OJSC Russian Railways in December 2021 amounted to 108.4 million tons, which is 1.4% more than in the same month of the previous year.

Freight turnover in December 2021 amounted to 220.9 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 2.6%. Freight turnover taking into account the empty wagon runs increased over the same month to 277.9 billion ton-km, a slight fall of 2.6%.
