Loading volumes on network owned by Russian Railways increased by 0.5% in October 2021

The loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 110.3 million tons in October 2021, 0.5% more than in the same month last year and 0.8% more than in October 2019.

Freight turnover in October 2021 increased by 3.4% compared to the same month last year and amounted to 231 billion tariff ton-kilometres. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased by 2.8% compared to October 2020, rising to 290.8 billion ton-km.

The loading volumes from January to October 2021 amounted to 1.0665 billion tons, 3.4% more than during the same ten-month period last year.

The railways loaded the following categories of freight during January-October 2021. The figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-October 2020:

  • coal – 309.3 million tons (+7%);
  • coke – 9.8 million tons (+6.4%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 178.6 million tons (+3.3%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 100.2 million tons (+0.3%);
  • ferrous metals – 56.7 million tons (+3%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 13.7 million tons (+17.5%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers - 53.7 million tons (+3.5%);
  • cement – 22.9 million tons (+5.3%);
  • timber – 35.6 million tons (+2.8%);
  • grain – 20.4 million tons (-5.1%);
  • construction materials – 108 million tons (-4.9%);
  • nonferrous ores and sulphuric feedstock – 16.6 million tons (-1.2%);
  • chemicals and soda – 20.1 million tons (-0.5%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 29.5 million tons (+ 4.3%);
  • miscellaneous freight, including containerised cargo – 91.5 million tons (+ 6.8%).

Freight turnover since the beginning of 2021 amounted to 2,190.4 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 4.3%. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased to 2,756.8 billion ton-km, up 3.6%.
