Loading volumes on network owned by Russian Railways up 4% between January and August 2021

Loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 109 million tons in August 2021, 0.9% more than in the same eight-month period last year, which was in turn 0.1% more than in August 2019.

Freight turnover in August 2021 increased by 1.9% compared to the same month last year and amounted to 220.9 billion tariff ton-kilometres. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased by 0.9% over the same month and rose to 276.6 billion ton-km.

Total loading volumes between January and August 2021 amounted to 849.8 million tons, 4% more than in the same period last year.

The railways loaded the following categories of freight. Figures in brackets indicate the percentage change compared to January and August 2020.

  • coal – 246.1 million tons (+ 8.8%);
  • coke – 7.7 million tons (+ 5.5%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 142.5 million tons (+ 1.6%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 80.5 million tons (+ 0.5%);
  • ferrous metals – 45.3 million tons (+ 2%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 10.8 million tons (+ 25.2%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 43.2 million tons (+ 3.5%);
  • cement – 17.9 million tons (+ 7.2%);
  • timber – 28.9 million tons (+ 2.7%);
  • grain – 15.6 million tons (+ 2.5%);
  • construction materials – 85.8 million tons (–3.5%);
  • nonferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 13.3 million tons (–0.6%);
  • chemicals and soda – 16.1 million tons (–0.6%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 23.5 million tons (+ 6.2%);
  • miscellaneous freight, including containerised cargo – 72.5 million tons (+ 7.1%).

Freight turnover since the beginning of 2021 amounted to 1,741.7 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 4.6%. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs amounted to 2,192.1 billion ton-km, up by 3.9%.
