Freight loading volumes on network owned by Russian Railways up 4.1% in July 2021

Loading on the network owned by Russian Railways in July 2021 amounted to 108 million tons, 4.1% more than in the same month last year and the same amount as in July 2019.

Freight turnover in July 2021 increased by 3.7% compared to July last year and amounted to 217.2 billion tariff ton-kilometres. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased by 2.7% over the same month and amounted to 271.8 billion ton-km.

Freight loading volumes between January and July 2021 amounted to 740.7 million tons, 4.5% more than in the same seven-month period last year.

The railways loaded the following categories of freight in January-July 2021. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-July 2020.

  • coal –5 million tons (+ 9.9%);
  • coke – 6.7 million tons (+ 5.7%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 124.3 million tons (+0.9%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 70 million tons (+ 0.5%);
  • ferrous metals – 40 million tons (+ 2.4%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 9.5 million tons (+ 29.9%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 37.9 million tons (+ 3.6%);
  • cement – 15.1 million tons (+7.8%);
  • timber – 25.4 million tons (+ 2.8%);
  • grain – 13.6 million tons (+ 9.7%);
  • construction materials – 73.6 million tons (-3%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphuric feedstock – 11.6 million tons (-0.2%);
  • chemicals and soda – 14.1 million tons (-0.7%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 20.2 million tons (+ 7.8%);
  • miscellaneous freight, including cargo in containers – 62.3 million tons (+ 7%).

Freight turnover since the beginning of 2021 amounted to 1,520.4 billion tariff ton-kilometres, an increase of 5%. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs rose to 1,915.2 billion ton-km, an rise of 4.3%.
