Passenger traffic on the Russian Railways network increased 2.7 times in May 2021
According to the latest figures, the infrastructure of Russian Railways carried 92.6 million passengers in May 2021, 2.7 times more than the 34.4 million who travelled in May 2020. Suburban passenger numbers increased by almost 2.6 times, from 32.4 million to 84.2 million people, while long-distance passengers were up by a factor of 4.3 from 1.9 million to 8.3 million people.
Passenger turnover in May 2021 amounted to 9 billion passenger-kilometres, 3.4 times more than the same indicator in May 2020, which stood at 2.6 billion pass-km. Suburban passenger turnover increased by almost 2.5 times and amounted to about 2.7 billion pass-km in May 2021, up from 1.1 billion pass-km in 2020, while long-distance passengers increased fourfold to 6.4 billion pass-km, up from about 1.6 billion pass-km in 2020.
From January to May 2021, a total of 403.4 million passengers were carried, up 25.5% compared to January-May 2020. Suburban passengers amounted to 371 million, an increase of 25.7%, while long-distance passengers rose to 32.4 million, up 23.8%.
Passenger turnover on the network owned by Russian Railways since the beginning of 2021 increased by 19.2% compared to the previous year and amounted to 34.7 billion pass-km. Suburban passenger turnover rose to 11 billion pass-km, an increase of 21.2%, while long-distance passenger turnover was up 18.3% to 23.7 billion pass-km.
