Loading volumes on the rail network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 99.4 million tons in February

According to the latest figures, loading volumes on the rail network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 99.4 million tons in February 2020, 0.6% less than in the same month last year.

Freight turnover in February 2020 fell by 2.4% compared to February last year and amounted to 197.4 billion tariff ton-kilometres. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs during the same month decreased by 2.9% and amounted to 251.4 billion ton-km.

According to the latest figures, loading volumes on the rail network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 199.6 million tons in January-February 2020, 2.8% less than during first two months of last year.

During January and February 2020, the railways loaded the following volumes of freight. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-February 2019.

  • coal – 57.8 million tons (-8.4%);
  • coke – 1.7 million tons (-6.4%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 38.7 million tons (-2.1%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 19.7 million tons (+2.8%);
  • ferrous metals – 12.1 million tons (-4.9%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 1.8 million tons (+30.5%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 10.1 million tons (-0.5%);
  • cement – 2.7 million tons (+3.6%);
  • timber – 6.5 million tons (-7.4%);
  • grain – 3.4 million tons (-17.1%);
  • construction materials – 17.8 million tons (+5.7%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphurous raw materials – 3.0 million tons (+1.8%);
  • chemicals and soda – 4.3 million tons (-0.7%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 4.3 million tons (-14.3%).

Freight turnover since the beginning of 2020 amounted to 406.8 billion tariff ton-km, a fall of 3.3%, while freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runss was 516.5 billion ton-km, which was down 3.9%.
