Russian Railways Carry 5.4 Mn TEU in January-October 2021

Russian Railways have reported a 12.7% year-on-year increase in rail container traffic during January-October 2021. All in all, almost 5.4 mn TEU was carried during the period under report.

Domestic container traffic grew by 6.4% up to 2.04 mn TEU, export was up 8.2% to 1.3 mn TEU, import up 13.8% 1.15 mn TEU, while transit surged 1.4-fold up to 889 thousand TEU.

Laden container traffic made some 3.8 mn TEU, up 17.7% year-on-year.

Commodity-wise, containerized grains grew the most, up 2.7-fold to 21 thousand TEU. Potatoes, vegetables and fruit were up 1.5-fold to 9 thousand TEU, non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur up 1.4-fold up to 32 thousand TEU.

Consumer goods were up 29.4% to 419 thousand TEU, hardware up 30.4% to 356 thousand TEU, machinery, engines and equipment up 27.9% to 311 thousand TEU, vehicles and parts up 17.7% to 230 thousand TEU.

Containerized chemicals and soda were up 8.5% to 623 thousand TEU, timber and woodwork up 10.4% to 503 thousand TEU, ferrous metals up 22.6% up to 205 thousand TEU, other and LCL cargo up 34.7% to 145 thousand TEU, and non-ferrous metals up 5.4% to 128 thousand TEU.

Construction cargo transportation increased by 18.1% up to 127 thousand TEU, chemical and mineral fertilizers by 26.5% to 44 thousand TEU, fish by 30.3% up to 23 thousand TEU, and other food products by 18.8% up to 162 thousand TEU.

Containerized paper was down 1% to 293 thousand TEU, oil and products down 10.9% to 60 thousand TEU, metal structures down 5.3% to 13 thousand TEU, and meal and flour down 1.2% to 9 up thousand TEU.
