GEFCO provides domestic just-In-time transportation for Gestamp using LNG-powered trucks
An estimated 57 tons of CO2 emissions saved annually compared to diesel-powered trucks.
Automotive engineering multinational Gestamp has selected GEFCO, a global multimodal supply-chain specialist and the leader in automotive logistics in Europe, to transport components in Portugal. GEFCO is using LNG-powered trucks to meet Gestamp’s need for efficient, sustainable transportation from its factory in Vendas Novas to customers in Palmela on a just-in-time basis.
Gestamp selected GEFCO Portugal after a call for tender at the end of 2020. The two-year contract involves transporting 86,400 tons of automotive components annually from Gestamp’s Vendas Novas facility specialized in welding and high tonnage metal stamping presses. Since March 2021, GEFCO has been operating domestic daily flows from Vendas Novas to an automotive assembly site in Palmela, using liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered trucks. These cover a distance of 900 km per day and offer an estimated annual reduction of 57 tons of CO2 emissions compared to diesel-powered trucks.
Jorge Possollo, Managing Director of GEFCO Portugal, commented: "Today all companies, especially in the automotive sector, are working towards carbon neutrality. GEFCO is working hand in hand with customers on solutions to ensure greener and more cost-effective freight transportation. After successful tests on a number of routes across the Iberian Peninsula over the last few months, we are excited to offer this service to our long-term business partner Gestamp and looking forward to making it available to other customers as a valuable sustainable alternative to traditional fuels."
Natália Carmona, Purchasing and Logistics Manager of Gestamp, commented: "We are proud of moving towards more sustainable transport solutions with our long-term partner GEFCO. This agreement represents another step forward in our company's long-standing commitment to achieving the highest sustainability standards throughout our entire production chain."
For companies and consumers alike, clean transportation has never been more important. Generating less greenhouse gas, noise and costs per mile, compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) offer exciting alternatives to diesel. GEFCO is partnering with customers, suppliers and truck manufacturers to test these green alternatives. Currently, trials of LNG/CNG trucks are being carried out in Slovakia, France and Poland to measure the costs and benefits before further rollout.
