Serbia starts Novi Sad-Subotica railway overhaul

Serbia has started an overhaul of the Novi Sad-Subotica section of the railway line linking Belgrade to Hungary's Budapest, the Serbian president's office said.

The project will be completed by the end of 2024, when the entire line linking Belgrade to the border with Hungary will be reconstructed, the president's office said in a statement on Monday.

Serbia signed in July 2018 a 943 million euro ($1.0 billion) deal with China Railway International (CRI) and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the overhaul of the 108 km-long Novi Sad-Subotica railway section.

CRI and CCCC are also the main contractors of the project for the overhaul of the Belgrade-Stara Pazova section of the Belgrade-Budapest railway, which is part of European Transport Corridor X. The overhaul of the Stara Pazova-Novi Sad section is being carried out by Russian company RZD International.
