1902 - the beginning of construction of the Circum-Baikal Railway
At the beginning of the last century Circum-Baikal railway called "gold buckle steel belt of Russia." She joined torn Trans-Siberian Railway (hence the "steel belt buckle"). A "golden" it was named because of the incredible complexity of the construction work, which required great physical and financial costs. By the number of different kinds of work per 1 km of track, and the difficulty of their execution Circum-Baikal Railway surpassed all built railway lines in the world and is considered among the most beautiful railways.
The uniqueness of this grand structure is that no railway in the world has such a huge number of man-made objects: 40 tunnels, 16 galleries and 470 viaducts, bridges and culverts, retaining walls 280. And that's not counting different station buildings, and is an architectural monument.
In 1904, the station was erected at the station Slyudyanka - the only station in the world built entirely of marble. This construction has completed the construction of the Circum-Baikal Railway.
Circum-Baikal Railway today - it is a monument of industrial architecture of federal importance and open-air museum. Highway runs from station to station Kultuk Baikal, its length is more than 85 km.
