Russian Railways’ network transported over 6.5 million TEU containers in 2021

In 2021, the network owned by Russian Railways transported 6.5025 million loaded and unloaded Twenty Foot Equivalent unit containers (TEUs) along on all routes, 12.1% more than in 2020.

As a result, the volume of container traffic has doubled in the last 5 years.

Last year, domestic Russian routes carried 2,467,900 million TEUs, an increase of 6.4%, while 1,556,400 TEUs were exported, a rise of 7.8%, 1,392,300 TEUs were imported, up 13.6%, and 1,076,000 TEUs were dispatched on transit routes, up by 34.4%.

The number of loaded containers dispatched on all routes increased by 16.6% and exceeded 4.6 million TEUs carrying more than 64.6 million tons of cargo, an increase of 14.9%.

The railways carried the following categories of freight in 2021. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to 2020.

  • chemicals and soda – 751,600 TEUs (+7.3%);
  • forest products – 599,200 (+10.9%);
  • industrial goods – 504,700 (+26.8%);
  • hardware – 430,900 (+28%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 377,600 (+27.1%);
  • paper – 359,200 (+1.2%);
  • cars and components – 273,200 (+10.7%);
  • ferrous metals – 248,400 (+20.7%);
  • miscellaneous and assembled cargo – 177,000 (+33.4%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 152,900 (+3.8%);
  • construction materials – 150,000 (+18%);
  • oil and oil products – 72,400 (-10.9%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 53,300 (+27.7%);
  • non-ferrous ore and sulphur feedstock – 42,000 (growth by a factor of 1.4);
  • metal structures – 15,500 (-5.6%);
  • fish – 28,700 (+31.6%);
  • grain – 27,100 (growth by a factor of 2.2);
  • milled products – 10,600 (-1%);
  • potatoes, fruit, vegetables – 12,500 (growth by a factor of 1.6);
  • miscellaneous food products – 198,300 (+19.1%).
