Container traffic on Russian Railways’ network up 13.2% in January-September 2021

Between January and September 2021, the Russian Railways’ network transported 4,788,500 loaded and empty Twenty-Foot Equivalent unit containers (TEUs) on all routes, 13.2% more than in the same three quarters of 2020.

The Company transported 1,813,000 TEUs on domestic routes, an increase of 6.2%, shipped 1,175,100 TEUs for export, up by 8.9%, delivered 1,018,600 imported TEUs, a rise of 14.7%, and handled 781,800 TEUs in transit, up by a factor of 1.4.

The number of loaded containers transported on all routes increased by 18.4%, rising to over 3.4 million TEUs carrying a total of 47.6 million tons of cargo, up by 16%.

The following categories and volumes of freight were transported between January and September 2021. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January and September 2020.

  • chemicals and soda – 560,600 TEUs (+9.1%);
  • timber – 453,500 (+10%);
  • industrial goods – 362,600 (+28.7%);
  • hardware – 312,200 (+30.3%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 276,600 (+31.6%);
  • paper – 261,000. (-0.9%);
  • cars and components – 208,700 (+25.3%);
  • ferrous metals – 182,600 (+23.1%);
  • rest and consolidated cargo – 126,800 (+33.7%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 114,700 (+7.5%);
  • construction materials – 111,800 (+17.3%);
  • oil and petroleum – 54,000 (-12.3%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 38,900 (+24.6%);
  • non-ferrous ore and sulphur feedstock – 27,400 (growth by a factor of4);
  • coal – 21,100 (new cargo);
  • metal structures – 11,900 (-0.8%);
  • fish – 19,800 (+22.6%);
  • grain – 19,800 (growth by a factor of 3);
  • milled products – 7,900 (+1.1%);
  • potatoes, fruit and vegetables – 7,900 (growth by a factor of4);
  • miscellaneous – 138,500 (+18.9%).
