Double-decker trains increased the volume of traffic in the first half of the year by 1.5 times compared to 2019 before the pandemic
Transportation by double-decker trains in the first half of 2021 increased by 1.5 times compared to 2019, rising to almost 4.2 million passengers, including 888,600 passengers who travelled in June, a jump of 46% compared to June 2019.
Double-decker trains accounted for 11.3% of the total traffic from January to June 2021 of the Federal Passenger Company, a subsidiary of JSC Russian Railways.
The most popular routes are:
- Moscow – Bryansk (16.5% of the total traffic on double-decker trains);
- Moscow – Voronezh (13.6%);
- Moscow – St. Petersburg (12.3%);
- St. Petersburg – Adler (7.2%);
- St. Petersburg – Murmansk (6.8%).
The growth in traffic volumes compared to 2019 is due to the fact that the Federal Passenger Company is increasing the number of such trains on the most popular routes. For example, last year double-decker trains connected Murmansk and St. Petersburg, as well as Moscow and Smolensk. Since May 2021, double-decker carriages have been included in train No. 72/71 Moscow – Cheboksary and – for the summer period – in train No. 277/278 St. Petersburg – Anapa.
At the moment, 21 pairs of double-decker trains run on 16 routes on Russian Railways. The Federal Passenger Company fleet has 623 double-decker carriages.
The new rolling stock is equipped with modern microclimate control systems, environmentally friendly toilet facilities, and multimedia systems. Each compartment has sockets for charging mobile devices and USB ports. In sleeper cars, each seat/berth is equipped with an LCD display for watching video programmes. Access to the compartment is provided by individual magnetic key cards.
For the convenience of passengers with limited mobility and their companions, the trains include carriages with special compartments with an increased area, as well as a lifting device for a wheelchair and other devices.
The Federal Passenger Company regularly initiates various marketing proposals for its passengers. For example, within the framework of the campaign "Choose your direction! Double-decker trains from 999 roubles," passengers can purchase tickets for the upper seats/berths in compartment carriages at favourable prices for double-decker trains. They can book travel documents for the Moscow – St. Petersburg route until 30 July, and for trains connecting Moscow with Penza, Kazan, Samara and Izhevsk, as well as on the Rostov-on-Don – Adler route, until 3 August 2021.
