Loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 1.2 billion tons in 2020

Loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways in 2020 amounted to 1.2436 billion tons, 2.7% less than in the previous year.

The railways transported the following items of freight in 2020. The figures in brackets show the percentage changed compared to 2019:

  • coal – 353.3 million tons (–5%);
  • coke – 11.2 million tons (+ 4%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 208.8 million tons (–10%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 119.7 million tons (–0.4%);
  • ferrous metals – 66.4 million tons (–10%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 14.3 million tons (–2.7%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 62.7 million tons (+ 3.7%);
  • cement – 25.1 million tons (–4.5%);
  • timber – 40.7 million tons (–3.1%);
  • grain – 27.9 million tons (+ 28.7%);
  • construction materials – 131.6 million tons (+ 6.1%);
  • nonferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 19,9 млн тонн (+2%);
  • chemicals and soda – 24.5 million tons (–6.1%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 33.8 million tons (–3.6%);
  • miscellaneous cargoes, including containers – 103.6 million tons (+ 4.1%).

Freight turnover in 2020 amounted to 2,544.4 billion tariff ton-kilometres, a decline of 2.2%. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs fell 2.6% to 3,220.6 billion ton-km.

Loading on the Russian Railways network in December 2020 amounted to 107 million tons, 0.3% more than in the same month of the previous year.

Freight turnover in December 2020 increased by 3.3% compared to the same month of the previous year and amounted to 226.3 billion tariff ton-km. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased by 3.1% compared to the same month in 2019 and amounted to 284.9 billion ton-km.
