First Russian high-speed rail to pass through Veliky Novgorod

The Scientific and Technical Council of Russian Railways has recommended that as a main option, the high-speed rail route between Moscow – St. Petersburg should pass through Veliky Novgorod.

The Council’s meeting took place on 9 December 2020 via a video conference. It was attended by the heads of the regions through which the route will pass, representatives of design organisations, scientific institutes and the general public.

“Moscow and St. Petersburg now have very good communication links. One more high-speed transport corridor along this route should therefore be as efficient as possible,” stressed Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, who opened the meeting.

Belozerov assured the participants that Russian Railways were aiming to work closely with regional and municipal authorities and achieve constructive cooperation with public organisations and, most importantly, with the residents of the cities, towns and villages adjacent to the future railway line.

“The maximum consideration of all interests in the implementation of this large-scale project will only benefit them because above all the line is being built for the people,” said the Company head.

The Council agreed that, in accordance with the recommended route option, it will send the corresponding proposals to the Ministry of Transport of Russia and Roszheldor (the Federal Rail Transport Agency) to amend the territorial planning scheme for the construction of the high-speed rail infrastructure.
