Freight delivery speeds on the Russian Railways’ network increased by 18% in August 2020
In August 2020, the average delivery speed of loaded shipments overall on the Russian Railways network increased to 434 km per day, 18% more than in the same month last year. Delivery reliability – the proportion of loaded shipments that arrived on time – was 99.2%, 1.2 percentage points more than in August 2019.
With a range of more than 2,600 kilometres, the average speed of loaded shipments increased to 635 km per day, which is 34% faster than in the same month last year. Faster speeds over long distances are due to better traffic routing, reduced time losses on manoeuvering operations, and an increased length of sections which guarantee safe passage for freight cars without inspections en route.
During January to August 2020, the average delivery speed of loaded shipments on the network owned by Russian Railways was 444 km per day, which is 12% faster than in the same eight-month period last year. At the same time, delivery reliability reached 99.4%, up slightly from 98.3% during January to August 2019.
