First piggyback dispatch in multimodal connection on Russian Railways’ network
Russian Railways continues to develop piggyback shipments.
As part of the next stage of the project, on 22 July 2020, a semi-trailer with cargo on a piggy platform arrived as part of a freight train at the Kaliningrad-Sortirovochnaya Station from Elektrougli station in the Moscow region. Later the same day, it was dispatched to the Kaliningrad Maritime Trade Port for transshipment to a ship for further delivery to Germany.
The shipment was unusual in that the loaded car trailer was first sent on the piggy platform, which travelled by an international multimodal route. Such transportations had previously only been carried out on domestic routes.
The first shipment of a loaded piggy platform took place in May 2020 as part of a container train between Kaliningrad – Moscow.
In June this year, a loaded piggy platform was dispatched for the first time on a new route, namely a return journey from Kaliningrad to St. Petersburg.
