Container traffic on network owned by Russian Railways up 16% to over 2.5 million TEUs in January-May 2021

In January-May 2021, 2,596,100 loaded and empty Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit containers (TEUs)were transported on the network owned by Russian Railways on all routes, 15.9% more than in the same period in 2020.

The number of TEUs on domestic routes rose by 7.8% to 988,600, while export routes witnessed a growth of 8.7% to 648,900 TEUs, but import routes jumped 18.1% to 545,300 TEUs and transit routes were up by a factor of 1.6 to 413,200 TEUs.

The number of loaded containers on all routes increased by 23.1% and amounted to more than 1.8 million TEUs with a total of 25.8 million tons of cargo transported, an increase of 18.4%.

The number of containers carrying the following categories of goods between January and May 2021 is indicated below. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-May 2020

  • chemicals and soda – 311,200 TEUs (+ 9.4%);
  • timber – 235,700 (+ 8.4%);
  • industrial goods – 178,500 (up by a factor of 1.4);
  • hardware – 164,000 (up by a factor of 1.4);
  • paper – 150,200 (+ 1.8%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 147,800 (up by a factor of 1.4);
  • automobiles and components – 117,900 (+ 38%);
  • ferrous metals – 100,000 (+ 26%);
  • miscellaneous and consolidated cargo – 64,000 (up by a factor of 1.4);
  • non-ferrous metals – 63,400 (+ 13.8%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 30,900 (-15.8%);
  • construction materials – 54,900 (+ 23.8%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilizers – 20,400 (+ 19.8%);
  • non-ferrous ore and sulphur feedstock – 15,100 (up by a factor of 1.5);
  • coal – 11,000 (new cargo);
  • metal structures – 6,600 (+ 15.8%);
  • fish – 10,100 (+ 16,5%);
  • grain – 16,000 (up by a factor of 4.3);
  • milled products – 4,300 (-3.2%);
  • potatoes, fruits and vegetables – 5,200 (up by a factor of 1.4 times);
  • miscellaneous food products – 73,000 (+ 24.4%).
