EnvironmentThe Company is implementing an investment project "Environmental Protection", which includes the construction of new and the reconstruction of existing environmental protection facilities and the purchase of environmental technologies and equipment, including equipment for dealing with the environmental consequences of emergencies.

Russian Railways is also carrying out the programme "Saving Nature for Future Generations", which replenishes the stock of plants removed during the construction of the combined road and rail route between Adler - Krasnaya Polyana. We have already planted 6,860 seedlings of Colchis boxwood at a cost of over 800,000 roubles. But this is only part of the programme for the conservation of rare species of plants and trees that we intend to undertake during the construction of the facilities for the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014, and we will be planting thousands of rare plant species in the near future.

Russian Railways is continuing its environmental protection efforts while building infrastructure for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Industrial Environmental Monitoring

Russian Railways’ 17 regional divisions are responsible for monitoring hazardous emissions, effluents and soil contamination on the territory where they operate. Stationary facilities were monitored by 53 eco-laboratories, including 4 lab-cars with onboard analytical complexes at the Severo-Kavkazskaya, Privolzhskaya, Kuibyshevskaya, Zapadno-Sibirskaya Railways, while mobile sources of hazardous emissions (diesel locomotives) were monitored using 121 environmental control points (ECP). After engine repairs, all locomotives are tested at ECPs to ensure that they comply with environmental standards.
