The integration of the Russian rail network into the pan-European and Asian transport systems is one of the priorities of Russian Railways’ work in international organisations.

Proceeding from the need to make maximum use of the competitive advantages of the 1520 broad gauge space, Russian Railways continues to strengthen cooperation with the railway administrations of the CIS and Baltic countries, both through the Council for Railway Transport of the Commonwealth member states and the platform offered by the Strategic Partnership 1520 Business Forum.

In order to improve passenger and freight traffic on international routes, Russian Railways also plays an active role in the work of the International Union of Railways (UIC), the Organisation for Cooperation between Railways (OSJD) and the International Rail Transport Committee (CIT).

Russian Railways, along with government representatives, participates in the development of a systemic transport policy within the UN in the European and Asian-Pacific regions:

  • United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE);
  • Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

Work is underway to develop cooperation within the framework of two inter-governmental associations:

  • BRICS, which brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa;
  • the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which consists of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status at the SCO.

Cooperation also proceeds through the platforms of the relevant business councils.
