Completion of the creation of the North Muya tunnel can be considered the end of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. By its length (15 343 m), it is the longest tunnel in Russia and the fifth in the world. Under the terms of the construction of the tunnel is unique: the permafrost, the abundance of groundwater, talus, landslides, tectonic faults.
Before the opening of the North Muya tunnel train passed through Severomuysky Range Perevalnoe the long detour, the slope rises which reached 40 ‰, which meant a vertical drop of 4 m per 100 m track. According to current regulations passenger traffic on such slopes were forbidden, so from Severobaykalsk they reached the station Angarakan and from Tynda - Station Okusikan. About 20 km between the stations of passengers transported by car-vahtovkah on a dirt road.

Reduce the number of locomotives, significantly reduced the transport of goods and passengers, increase safety. Prior to the opening movement of trains through the tunnel re-run of 33 km, and the total annual costs in 2003 prices reached 15 million rubles. a year without a sharp decrease in traffic safety.
