2003 - creation of JSC "Russian Railways"

JSC "Russian Railways" was formed as a result of reform of the Ministry of Railways on the basis of RF Government Decree №585 of September 18, 2003 Creation of the Company was the result of the first phase of the reform of the railway industry.

December 5, 2003 - the opening of traffic on the North Muya tunnel.

Completion of the creation of the North Muya tunnel can be considered the end of the Baikal-Amur Mainline. By its length (15 343 m), it is the longest tunnel in Russia and the fifth in the world. Under the terms of the construction of the tunnel is unique: the permafrost, the abundance of groundwater, talus, landslides, tectonic faults.

The opening of the North Muya tunnel allowed to organize traffic on the BAM on the shortest path. While trains decreased by 6 times (journey time to bypass the plot is 2.5 hours, and the road through the tunnel takes about 15 minutes). In addition, the operation of the North Muya tunnel allowed to refuse a double thrust, moving trains with alpine slopes of the bypass road.
