The history of railways, XIX century

1834 - construction of Russia's first railway line

The first steam railway in Russia was built in 1834 at the Nizhny Tagil Metallurgical Plant in the Urals by the naturally talented father and son team, the serfs Yefim and Myron Cherepanov, , who also built two locomotives for the railway.

August 1834 - Franz von Gerstner, an Austrian engineer, arrives in Russia

At the invitation of Russia's mining authorities, Franz von Gerstner, the well-known Austrian engineer and a professor at Vienna's University of Technology, arrived in St. Petersburg in August 1834.

During some four months, von Gerstner travelled to many cities in Russia, from Moscow to the Urals. On his return to St. Petersburg, he presented a detailed note to Tsar Nicholas I in which he outlined his views on railway construction. Von Gerstner noted that:

"... there is no country in the world where the railways would be more beneficial, and even necessary, than in Russia, as they provide an opportunity to reduce long distances by increasing the speed of movement."
