Construction of Sirt - Benghazi railway line
April 17, 2008 between JSC "Russian Railways" and the Office of Management and
implementation of railway projects of the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya
signed a contract for the construction of the railway line Sirt - Benghazi. Co-executor
of the contract is a subsidiary of JSC "Russian Railways" - JSC "Zarubezhstroytehnologiya."
The project involved the construction of the section of Sirt - Benghazi modern high-speed railway lines with a width of 1435 mm, which was to pass along the Mediterranean coast and connect major Libyan cities, and in the future become part of the international transport corridor in the north of Africa.
In the first phase of the project was provided for the use of diesel traction (speed up to 160 km / h), the second - the electrification of the route and the transition to electric traction (speed up to 250 km / h).
Due to the emergence of a military conflict in Libya working on the construction project of the railway line Sirt - Benghazi suspended in February 2011,
JSC "Russian Railways" take all possible steps to intensify talks with the Libyan side to discuss the prospects for the resumption of the further implementation of the project of construction of the railway line Sirt - Benghazi in Libya, as well as develop a joint coordinated action plan in this direction.
