Russian Railways’ Cargo Continues to Slide

During 2019, Russian Railways loaded 1.278 bn tons of cargo, down 0.9% year-on-year. Almost all commodities were down.

Coal loading declined by 0.8% down to 372 mn tons. Oil and products, Russian Railways’ second most important cargo in terms of volume, decreased by 1.9% down to 232 mn tons.

Ferrous metals were down 5.6% to 73.8 mn tons, timber and logs down 8.1% to 42 mn tons, soda and chemicals down 1.1% to 26.1 mn tons. Grain loading dropped by 20.1% down to 21.7 mn tons.

Ferrous metal scrap declined by 7.7% down to 14.7 mn tons, non-ferrous ore and raw sulphur by 0.5% down to 19.6 mn tons, coke by 4.3% down to 10.8 mn tons.

Construction cargo was up 0.2% to 124 mn tons, ferrous and manganese ore up 3% to 120.2 mn tons, chemical and mineral fertilizers up 2.2% to 60.5 mn tons, and cement up 4.7% to 26.3 mn tons.

In December, Russian Railways loaded 106.7 mn tons, down 2% year-on-year h.

Cargo throughput in 2019 made 2,601.3 bn ton/km, up 0.2% year-on-year.

In December, cargo throughput decreased by 2.9% year-on-year down to 218.4 bn ton/km.
