Russia and Cuba are considering opening an office of the Russian railway RZD on the island
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia and Cuba are studying the possibility of installing an office of the Russian Railways (RZD) company on the Caribbean island, the Russian Ministry of Transportation announced.
In a statement, the Russian ministry said Monday that Russian Deputy Minister of Transportation Dmitri Zverev held negotiations with Cuban Deputy Prime Minister of Transportation Marta Oramas Rivero.
In the consultations "the possibility of creating a representation of RZD in Cuba was discussed," says the note.
The text indicates that the negotiations highlighted "the progress made by RZD and (its subsidiary) RZD International and the Cuban Railways Union (UFC)" in the reconstruction of railway infrastructure on the island.
In addition, the parties highlighted the signing on October 29, 2019 of the agreement complementary to the contract for the restoration and modernization of railway infrastructure in Cuba, on the design and training of Cuban personnel, the Russian ministry added.
At the beginning of last October, RZD signed a contract for the restoration and modernization of the railway infrastructure in Cuba, worth 1,880 million euros.
The project provides for the design, repair and modernization of more than 1,000 kilometers of the island"s railway infrastructure with Russian equipment and materials.
