Passenger traffic on the Russian Railways' network increased by 7.9% in May 2017


According to the latest figures, in May 2017, 96.8 million passengers were transported on the infrastructure of Russian Railways, 7.9% more than in the same month last year. Suburban passenger numbers amounted to 88.74 million, an increase of 8.6%, while long-distance passengers were up 0.6% to 8.07 million.

Passenger turnover in May 2017 amounted to 9.5 billion passenger-kilometres, 1.9% less than during May 2016. Suburban passenger turnover was 2.85 billion pass-km, an increase of 0.5%, while long-distance passenger turnover decreased to 6.66 billion pass-km, a decline of 2.9%.

In January-May 2017, 430.4 million passengers travelled, an increase of 9.7% compared to January-April 2016. Long-distance passengers amounted to 35.6 million, up 0.3%, while suburban passengers jumped by 10.6% to 394.8 million.

Passenger turnover on the Russian Railways' network since the beginning of 2017 decreased by 0.6% compared to the previous year and amounted to 40.8 billion pass-km. Suburban passenger turnover amounted to 12.2 billion pass-km, an increase of 3.6%, while long-distance passenger turnover was down to 28.6 billion pass-km, a decline of 2.4%.

During January-May 2017, 40.9 million passengers travelled on the Moscow Central Ring (MCC) . More than 8.9 million trips were made in May.

The record number of passengers on the MCC since it was opened on 10 September 2016 was reached on 18 May 2017, when 379,000 passengers used the Ring.
