Loading on the network of Russian Railways increased by 3.5% in May 2017

According to the latest figures, loading on the Russian Railways' network in May 2017 amounted to 106.5 million tons, 3.5% more than in May 2016.

Freight turnover in May 2017 increased by 7% compared to May last year and amounted to 209.3 billion tariff ton-km. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagons runs increased by 6.5% during the same period and amounted to 265.9 billion ton-km.

According to the latest figures, loading during January-May 2017 amounted to 516.9 million tons, 3.8% more than during the same five months of last year.

During January-May 2017, the Railways loaded the following items of freight. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-May 2016.

  • coal – 149.3 million tons;
  • coke – 4.7 million tons (+1.3%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 99 million tons (+1.3%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 45.2 million tons (-1.1%);
  • ferrous metals – 29.8 million tons (-0.4%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 5.6 million tons (+7.4%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 23.8 million tons (+7%);
  • cement – 9.6 million tons (-1.5%);
  • timber – 19.1 million tons (+4.3%);
  • grain – 8.1 million tons (+6.2%);
  • construction materials – 52.6 million tons (-4.4%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphur feedstock – 8.5 million tons (-1.4%);
  • chemicals and soda – 11 million tons (+2.4%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 14.6 million tons (+14.3%).

Freight turnover from the beginning of 2017 amounted to 1,022.6 billion tariff ton-km, an increase of 7.4%. Freight turnover including empty wagons runs was 1,306.8 billion ton-km, up 7.1%.
