“The importance of energy saving encourages transport companies to introduce new technologies,” says Head of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov

Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, has spoken about the Company’s measures to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Belozerov was addressing a business breakfast on the economy’s impact on climate change at the Franco-Russian Economic, Financial, Industrial and Trade Council (CEFIC) in Paris on 17 December 2018.

According to the Company head, the importance of energy saving encourages transport companies to introduce new technologies. Russian Railways, for example, has reduced energy consumption by more than a quarter in the last 15 years, despite a significant increase in freight turnover.

Belozerov noted that according to international assessments, Russian Railways ranks first in the world in terms of the energy efficiency of rail freight and third with regard to passenger services.

The Company implements series of measures to reduce its environmental impact and improve its energy efficiency on a consistent basis. In particular, at the request of Russian Railways, Russian research institutes have developed a system for organising train timetables to optimise energy use. This system has been praised by international experts and is currently being further developed on the rail network.

In addition, the Company has been working with renewable energy sources for more than 10 years. One of the first such renewable sources was a pilot project to install solar modules at Anapa train station, where a programme was implemented to introduce heat pumps for heating and heating water in administrative and industrial buildings, autonomous street lamps using solar panels, lighting systems and a back-up power supply running on wind and solar energy.

"For our part, we are also interested in studying the best practices and innovative technologies that are available in the French transport industry," said Oleg Belozerov.
