Loading volumes on the rail network owned by Russian Railways exceeded 100 million tons in January 2020

According to the latest figures, loading on the Russian Railways network in January 2020 amounted to 100.2 million tons, 4.9% less than in the same month last year.

Freight turnover in January 2020 decreased by 5.1% compared to January 2019 and amounted to 209.2 billion tariff ton-km. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs during the same month time decreased by 5.8% to 264.9 billion tons-km.

In January 2020, the railways carried the following categories of freight. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January 2019:

  • coal – 29.3 million tons (-10.8%);
  • coke – 0.876 million tons (-11.1%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 19.9 million tons (-3.9%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 10.1 million tons (2%);
  • ferrous metals – 6.4 million tons (-2.2%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 0.663 million tons (12.6%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 5.2 million tons (-2.3%);
  • cement – 1.2 million tons (8.4%);
  • timber – 3.1 million tons (-14.1%);
  • grain – 1.6 million tons (-21.7%);
  • construction materials – 8.4 million tons (0.9%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphurous raw materials – 1.5 million tons (-2.1%);
  • chemicals and soda – 2.2 million tons (-2.4%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 2.1 million tons (-15.3%).
