Oleg Belozerov: "The key to realising Africa’s strategic advantages is modern railways"
Oleg Belozerov, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, has taken part in the Russia-Africa Economic Forum now being held in Sochi in Southern Russia.
Speaking at the plenary session of "Russian Competence for Africa," the head of Russian Railways stressed the significant role of railway transport in the development of African economies.
"Africa is rapidly taking the lead on many social and economic indicators. It is possible to maintain this dynamic and ensure the quality of economic growth and of people’s lives only by developing railways – that is shown by global experience," said Oleg Belozerov.
The Company CEO expressed confidence that the development of railways on the continent would take all related areas of activity up to a fundamentally different level. As an example, he cited the medical trains which Russian Railways runs and which are capable of providing assistance in the most remote regions.
According to Belozerov, the use of such technology in Africa would, in particular, help prevent the spread of infectious diseases and combat epidemics.
The head of Russian Railways also noted that the Company was already present in Africa, since its logistics division GEFCO operates in both North and South Africa.
Oleg Belozerov sees the development of railway infrastructure as another broad field for cooperation with his African colleagues.
"Russian Railways is focused on engineering and construction, railway management and consulting. We are working with many countries in Africa and are discussing the prospects for large-scale railway projects. I am sure that fast-growing Africa needs powerful, modern railway systems. This is the key to realising the continent’s strategic advantages," said Oleg Belozorov.
