Russian and Egyptian railways to cooperate on implementing infrastructure projects in Egypt
Oleg Belozerov, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, and Ashraf Raslan, the Chairman of the Board of Egyptian National Railways, have signed a letter of intent. The signing took place on 23 October 2019 in Sochi in Southern Russian during the Russia-Africa Economic Forum.
The parties confirmed their mutual interest in the joint implementation of comprehensive projects to modernise the railway infrastructure of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
According to the document, the parties intend to study substantively the possibilities of cooperation on potential joint projects such as the construction of a new Manashi - October 6 line, a second track on the stretches between Kaliup - Menuf - Tanta, Imbaba - Manashi - Itad - Alexandria and Tanta - Zeft -Zagazig, as well as the installation of modern alarm, centralisation and blocking systems along these sections.
In addition, the parties will consider the possibility of cooperation on the creation of a unified dispatch centre for the needs of Egyptian National Railways.
The parties also said that training and improving the qualifications of the employees at Egyptian National Railways with the involvement of Russian higher educational institutions was another promising area of cooperation.
