Russian Railways and Nigeria’s Ministry of Transport conclude memorandum of understanding
Oleg Belozerov, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, and Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transport of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, have signed a memorandum of understanding.
The document was signed on 23 October 2019 within the framework of the Russia-Africa Economic Forum currently being held in Sochi in Southern Russia.
According to the memorandum, the parties have agreed to long-term cooperation. In particular, the document notes that the Government of Nigeria is interested in restoring existing railway lines and rolling stock and expanding the Nigerian railway network through the construction of new railway lines.
The memorandum also states that the parties will seek to expand cooperation on the development of the railway industry in the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the improvement the country’s railway equipment.
The document also stated that Russian Railways would determine the scope of its participation in the proposed projects in Nigeria, in particular the Coastal Line between the capital Lagos and Calabar and the Harcourt - Maiduguri railway project, taking into account its technical and personnel reserve.
In addition, Russian Railways will identify the direction of the development of railway transport systems by means of the design, construction, management and maintenance of railway infrastructure in Nigeria and the implementation of other modernisation solutions that can be offered to the Nigerian government.
The signed document also allows the parties to initiate other areas of cooperation by mutual consent.
