Russian Railways and Austrian Railways to cooperate on freight and logistics

Moscow has hosted the second meeting of the High-Level Council of Russian Railways and Austrian Railways (ÖBB).

The co-chairs were Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, and Andreas Matte, CEO of ÖBB Holding AG.

Senior managers of the Russian and Austrian railways and heads of enterprises belonging to the Russian Railways and ÖBB holdings also took part in the council meeting, which was held on 29 August 2019.

One of the key issues under discussion was cooperation on freight transport and logistics. The parties noted that freight rail traffic between Russia and Austria had increased rising by 8.8% during January to July 2019 compared to the same period last year.

At the same time, said Oleg Belozerov, significant potential existed for cooperation between the Russian Railways and ÖBB holdings in the field of freight transportation. Using the existing reserves would facilitate the joint development of the Eurasian Corridor via the terminals in the Kaliningrad region, the completion of work on the introduction of electronic data exchange in freight transportation by international rail links and the distribution of digital services.

Another important topic on the agenda was the project to build a 1520 mm broad gauge railway line between Košice, Bratislava and Vienna. The parties considered the current status of the project and strategic objectives.

In addition, the parties recognised that it was important to continue to focus on strengthening the workforce, a task which is consistent with the current experience exchange programme between employees of the companies Young Talents.
