CEO of Russian Railways and Spain’s Minister of Development discuss cooperation in rail sector

Oleg Belozorov, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, José Luis Ábalos, Spain’s Minister of Development, discussed the main areas of cooperation in the railway sector in Moscow on 27 August 2019.

One of the priority areas for cooperation between the two parties is to increase transit traffic between Spain and China, which is especially important against the background of the general growth in container flows between Europe and China.

Container services along the Yiwu in China to Madrid route are currently operating, together with Spanish partners. This route runs via Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany and France and has been open since 2014.

In the first six months of 2019, 39 container trains transported more than 3,600 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units from Yiwu to Madrid. This route of some 10,000 km is the longest on which container trains run and is one of several routes that exist today under the New Silk Road project.

At the same time, Oleg Belozorov noted the existence of a significant potential for cooperation between Russia and Spain on rail freight and said that the parties agreed on the need for joint think about ways to attract an additional European freight base to this route.

During the meeting, the sides also touched on issues of cooperation in the field of passenger traffic, the management of railway stations, the development of transport hubs and security.

Cooperation on the infrastructure markets of third countries was also a promising area for future joint work.
