During 1H 2019 Russian Railways purchased 23 suburban trains for the regions

Russian Railways continues to implement its programme of upgrading commuter rolling stock for the Russian regions. During the first half of the year, the Company purchased seven new EP3D AC electric trains consisting of 28 carriages. The new rolling stock signifies an upgrade of the Company’s suburban train fleet at its regional branches South-Eastern Railways and Volga Railways and will be used to serve passengers in the territory of the Voronezh, Lipetsk and Saratov regions. The new trains will serve passengers on the Saratov - Gagarin Airport stretch, where work is currently underway to set up a new stop.

The Company also took delivery of 16 new Lastochka electric trains with 89 carriages with different configurations. All of them are already in service, transporting passengers in Moscow and St. Petersburg and Moscow, Leningrad and Tver regions and the Republic of Karelia.

To celebrate the 45th anniversary since construction began on the Baikal-Amur Mainline, the Russian Railways Holding purchased and commissioned 12 new second-class open-plan carriages with locomotive traction for suburban passenger traffic on Far Eastern Railways and East-Siberian railways. The new carriages will be used for suburban passenger services on a number of routes in the territory of three constituent parts of the Russian Federation: the Republic of Buryatia and the Irkutsk and Amur regions. In total, Russian Railways will allocate about 28.7 billion roubles in 2019 to the renewal of rolling stock for suburban services. It is planned to spend about 21.8 billion roubles of this sum on the purchase of Lastochka electric trains in various configurations using on both direct current and dual-system trains for operation at the Central and St. Petersburg transport hubs, the Republic of Karelia, the Sverdlovsk region and Perm and Krasnodar territories etc.

Another 6.9 billion roubles is being allocated to the purchase of 17 new EP3D AC train sets with 72 carriages and one EP2D DC train set with 8 cars for operation in the territory of Transbaykal Territory and the Voronezh, Lipetsk and Saratov regions, as well as eight new RA-3 rail-bus trains for commuter traffic in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and Krasnodar Territory.

In addition, three new rail buses are expected to be delivered to Sakhalin Island in the near future. The Company is refitting the island’s railway infrastructure, which involves changing the network-wide gauge to 1520 mm. This work is now nearing completion. Sakhalin Region has bought the three new rail buses.

Lastochka electric trains are produced by Ural Locomotives, while the EP3D series AC electric trains and direct current EP2D trains are made at the Demikhovsky Engineering Plant. Metrovagonmash manufactures the latest RA-3 series rail buses.

All this modern multiple-unit rolling stock meets the most modern international requirements. Electric trains are distinguished by a higher level of passenger comfort and are equipped with climate control systems, energy-saving LED lighting and wheelchair lifts etc.
