Russian Railways and Russian Government conclude agreement to develop quantum communications

Maxim Akimov, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation, and Oleg Belozerov, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, have signed an agreement of intent on the development of high-tech quantum communications in the Russian Federation.

The signing took place in the presence of Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation. The subject of the agreement is the unification and coordination of joint actions of the Government and Russian Railways to accelerate technological development, as well as for the Russian Federation to achieve the position as one of the leaders in the field of quantum communications on the global technology markets.

As the main mechanism for implementing the agreement, a roadmap for the development of the technological field of quantum communications will be drawn up which will provide for the formation of scientific, technological and production infrastructure and the promotion of world-class products, including on the basis of relevant domestic technologies, as well as the training of qualified personnel.

In order for the agreement to be implemented on terms of mutually beneficial cooperation, partners in the shape of production, scientific, educational and other organisations will be involved, including small and medium-sized businesses. The development of technologies in the field of quantum communications will be based on the principles of market relations and openness to international cooperation while respecting national interests.

Russian Railways is implementing a digital transformation strategy, including upgrading networks and communication systems. The Company’s basic IT infrastructure includes over 70,000 kilometres of backbone fibre-optic communication lines.

Russian Railways is also one of the co-founders of the Digital Transport and Logistics Association, which has been presented by the Ministry of Transport of Russia under the Digital Economy programme. The project’s main objective is to create and develop in Russia a single multimodal transport and logistics space based on domestic digital and quantum technologies and domestic software.
