Passenger numbers travelling on double-decker trains increased by 28% in May 2019

In May 2019, 518,700 people were transported by double-decker trains operated by the Federal Passenger Company, a subsidiary of OJSC Russian Railways. This figure was up by 28% compared to May last year.

In total, about 2.2 million passengers travelled on double-decker trains between January and May of this year, which is 15.5% more than during the same period last year.

The proportion of passenger numbers travelling by double-decker trains on long-distance services operated by the Federal Passenger Company amounted to 6.2%.

The most popular destinations between January and May were from Moscow to Voronezh, which accounted for 26.5% of the total number of passengers taking double-decker trains, followed by Moscow to St. Petersburg (23.3%), Moscow to Adler (9.4%) and Moscow to Izhevsk (9.1%).

The Federal Passenger Company is constantly expanding the route network which offer services using double-decker carriages. It currently operates 12 pairs of double-decker trains on 9 routes: from Moscow to St. Petersburg, Adler, Kazan, Voronezh, Samara, Kislovodsk and Izhevsk, and in addition from St. Petersburg to Adler and from Rostov-on-Don to Adler.

The Federal Passenger Company is also constantly updating its fleet by adding new double-decker carriages. At the beginning of 2019, the Company had 362 units, but has now increased the total to 418 double-decker carriages of various types, including sleeper carriages, carriages divided into compartments, carriages with compartments for staff and administration which also contain compartments for passengers with disabilities and carriages with seating, as well as dining cars.

Double-decker rolling stock enables the Company to carry almost twice as many passengers compared to a single-decker train.

The Federal Passenger Company also offers flexible fares and promotions to increase the attractiveness of its double-deckers.

To improve passenger comfort, the carriages are equipped with modern microclimate maintenance systems, environmentally-friendly toilet facilities, security control systems and multimedia systems.

Each compartment provides sockets for charging mobile devices. In sleeper carriages, each berth is equipped with an LCD display for viewing video programmes. Access to the compartment is by means of individual magnetic key cards.

Each double-decker train is also adapted for people with disabilities. The trains have a carriage with a special compartment offering increased area, a lifting device for a wheelchair and other devices necessary for a comfortable trip.

All the necessary information is also duplicated in Braille.
