Loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways amounted to 106.3 million tons in May 2019

According to the latest figures, loading volumes on the network owned by Russian Railways in May 2019 amounted to 106.3 million tons, 3.8% less than during May last year.

Freight turnover in May 2019 increased by 2.3% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 224.4 billion ton-km tariffs. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs increased by 2.3% on May 2018 and amounted to 284.8 billion ton-km.

According to the latest figures, loading volumes amounted to 532.1 million tons during January to May 2019, 0.7% less than in the same period last year.

The railways shipped the following categories of freight during January-May 2019. The figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-May 2018.

  • coal – 159.2 million tons (+0.8%);
  • coke – 4.6 million tons (+2.2%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 97.1 million tons (-1.7%);
  • iron and manganese ores – 49.6 million tons (+6%);
  • ferrous metals – 32.2 million tons (-2.5%);
  • ferrous metal scrap – 5.6 million tons (+4.7%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 25.4 million tons (+0.7%);
  • cement – 9.6 million tons (+5%);
  • timber – 18.7 million tons (-4.6%);
  • grain – 8.4 million tons (-32%);
  • construction materials – 49 million tons (-5.6%);
  • non-ferrous ores and sulphur raw materials – 8.1 million tons (-2.1%);
  • chemicals and soda – 11.1 million tons (-2.9%);
  • industrial raw materials and moulded materials – 14 million tons (-3.1%).

Since the beginning of 2019, freight turnover has amounted to 1,101 billion ton-km tariffs, an increase of 2.7% compared to the five months from January to May in 2018. Freight turnover taking into account empty wagon runs was up to 1,402.2 billion ton-kilometres, a rise of 2.7%.
