CEO of Russian Railways holds working meetings with the heads of railways and transport departments in Finland, Iran and Kyrgyzstan

Oleg Belozerov, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, has held a number of working meetings on the margins of the 70th meeting of the Council for Rail Transport of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which is currently being held in Helsinki.

Harri Pursiainen, State Secretary of Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, focused on the development of passenger services between Russia and Finland, in particular with regard to improving service quality, where one of the decisive indicators is fully observing the timetable. Special attention was therefore paid to the flagship project, the high-speed Allegro train services which run between St. Petersburg and Helsinki.

At the meeting with the president of VR Group (Finnish Railways), Rolf Jansson, positive results were noted in using digital technologies in freight traffic. At present, work is continuing to expand the range of cargo serviced by electronic documents. Oleg Belozerov stressed that by the end of 2019, paperless technology would be introduced to the whole range of traffic between Russia and Finland.

The parties also considered the possibility of using the Freight Shipments electronic marketplace in Finland. The head of Russian Railways suggested identifying a pilot site to test the transportation of goods between Russia and Finland which had been booked through this electronic service.

During the meeting, the Finnish side also expressed an interest in reducing the travel times of passenger trains between Helsinki and Moscow and carrying out a joint study of the issue, especially in view of the high tourist potential of both cities.

In addition, Oleg Belozerov discussed the implementation of the Garmsar-Inche Burun railway electrification project with Said Rasulia, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, who is also Chairman of the Board and President of Iranian Railways. Completing this contract will make it possible to double train speeds, increase the line’s carrying capacity to 10 million tons and, in general, significantly improve the quality of Iran’s railway communications with all of the 1520 mm broad-gauge railway space.

The meeting with Kanatbek Abdykerimov, the Managing Director of Kyrgyz Railways, was heavily focused on the projects for the development of the rail network in the Kyrgyz Republic, including the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway line.
