UTLC ERA transit shipments between Asia - Europe up 60% in 2018

A working meeting has taken place between the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov, the Chairman of the Board of JSC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy National Company Sauat Mynbayev and the Head of the Belarusian Railway Vladimir Morozov.

The meeting was held in Moscow.

The three heads of the rail companies discussed the 2018 activities and results of the JSC United Transport and Logistics Company Eurasian Rail Alliance (UTLC EPA), a joint venture between the railways of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, as well as long-term development plans.

During the meeting, the parties noted the increase in UTLK EPA’s shipment volumes, which in 2018 amounted to 280,600 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), an increase of 60% on 2017, as well as the increasing amount of container trains on transit routes and the introduction of experimental "through" technology for long-haul container trains, with up to 84 conditional cars.

The participants also highlighted the positive trends and increases in freight and passenger traffic both with Kazakhstan and Belarus, and also confirmed their readiness to cooperate further.

Discussing the long-term plans and tasks facing JSC UTLK EPA in 2019, the parties noted the need to achieve jointly a container train "through" speed of 1,150 kilometre a day this year.

Oleg Belozerov, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Russian Railways, also held bilateral negotiations with Sauat Mynbayev, Chairman of the Management Board of NC KTZ JSC, and Vladimir Morozov, Head of Belarusian Railways.

The United Transport and Logistics Company provides a transit service for containers, which between 2015 and 2018 facilitated over a fivefold increase in the volume of transit through Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, a significant reduction in journey time and increased speeds.

At this project’s test site, cooperation mechanisms are being tested which can then be used in other sectors of the economy in the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
