Container shipments on the Russian Railways’ network increased by 12.5% in October 2018

In October 2018, 400,200 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) of containers were transported on all routes on the network owned by Russian Railways, 12.5% ​​more than in October 2017.

In January-October 2018, the volume of freight amounted to 3.64 million TEUs, an increase of 13.6% compared to the same period last year. During these ten months, about 1.57 million TEUs were dispatched domestically, a rise of 4.9%, transit containers amounted to 435,900 TEUs, up by 31.2%, while 928,800 TEUs were exported, up by 17.5%, and 704,000 TEUs were imported, a rise of 20.5%.

The transportation of loaded containers on all routes during January-October 2018 increased by 13.4% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 2.4 million TEUs.

In total, over 34.4 million tons of freight were transported, a rise of 12%.

The freight carried included the following categories. Figures shown in brackets indicate the percentage change compared to January-October 2017/

chemicals and soda – 406,000 TEUs (+9.8%);

timber – 313,400 (+40.9%);

paper – 257,800 (+7.4%);

industrial goods – 231,300 (+9.5%);

general metal goods – 218,100 (+13.5%);

automobiles – 182,600 (+23.5%);

machines, machine and engineering tools, engines – 174,900 (+21%);

ferrous metals – 101,200 (+17.2%);

non-ferrous metals – 89,800 (-2.7%);

construction materials – 84,200 (+13.6%);

chemical and mineral fertilsers – 35,500 (-21.9%).
