"We will have to integrate the railways even closer on the basis of joint decisions in the IT field," says Oleg Belozerov

Oleg Belozerov, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of OJSC Russian Railways and Head of the Council for Railway Transport of the Commonwealth Member States, has taken part in the international conference "Central Asia in the System of International Transport Corridors: Strategic Perspectives and Unrealised Opportunities."

The conference opened in Tashkent on 20 September 2018 in the presence of Abdullah Aripov, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Speaking about the importance of the work of the organisations that unite the railways of the different countries, Oleg Belozerov noted the activities of the Council for Rail Transport, which transported 2 billion tons of freight in 2017.

"The Council creates all the conditions necessary to realise the transport potential of our countries, including the provision of transport links across Eurasia. In the future, we will see an even closer integration of the railways on the basis of joint decisions in the field of information technology," said Belozerov.

In the development of transit potential, continued Belozerov, an important role would be played by a coordinated tariff policy and the creation of new transport corridors along the Eurasian transit route.

The head of Russian Railways also stressed that in Russia, much attention was being paid at the state level to the development of transit container transportation. Russia’s leadership has set the task of increasing the volume of transit containers fourfold by 2024 and to achieve that aim by developing a plan for the modernisation and expansion of the mainline infrastructure.

According to Oleg Belozerov, the East-West and North-South international transport corridors will have to be more actively developed in order to attain that goal.

In this regard, the key tasks will be the creation of multimodal logistics centres and the implementation of joint infrastructure projects.

One of the important elements of the Eurasian partnership in the transport sphere will be to build a high-speed freight and passenger railway corridor from China to Europe via Russian territory.
