Container traffic on network owned by Russian Railways increased by 12% in 1H2018

In June 2018, 363,800 Twenty-Foot Equivalent units (TEUs) of containers were transported on the network owned by Russian Railways, 11.9% more than in the same month last year.

From January to June 2018, the total volume of TEUs transported amounted to 2.07 million, an increase of 11.9% compared to the same period last year.

In the first half of the year, 897,600 TEUs were dispatched on domestic routes, an increase of 3.3%, transit containers amounted to 222,500 TEUs, an increase of 24.8%, while 551,700 TEUs were exported, an increase of 18.2%. In addition, 400,700 TEUs were imported, an increase of 18.5%.

The transportation of loaded containers on all types of routes during January to June 2018 increased by 12.8% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 1.39 million TEUs or about 19.7 million tons of cargo, an increase of 10.8%.

The transported goods included the following items of freight. The percentages in brackets show the change compared to January to June 2017:

  • chemicals and soda – 236,400 TEUs (+7.3%);
  • paper – 154,500 (+8.5%);
  • timber – 172,700 (+32.5%);
  • industrial goods – 119,000 (+7.2%);
  • metal goods – 123,700 (+14.9%);
  • automobiles – 106,200 (+31.6%);
  • machines, machine tools, engines – 99,500 (+22.6%);
  • non-ferrous metals – 53,300 (-1.7%);
  • ferrous metals – 58,300 (+17%);
  • construction materials – 45,500 (+12.4%);
  • oil and petroleum products – 38,800 (+0.7%);
  • chemical and mineral fertilisers – 25,100 (-8.4%).
